A Three-Storey Mahogany Sunroom in Falmouth, MA

by | Feb 5, 2026 | Construction

Cape Cod’s architecture is as iconic as its coastline. To preserve the beauty of a local residence in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Sunspace Design was contacted by the homeowners who faced a significant challenge on their property: their existing, poorly constructed three-storey sunroom was in dire need of replacement. The unit had failed to withstand the elements and had become an eyesore. Coordinating with the homeowner’s representative, our team set out to remove the old structure and replace it with a grand, multi-tier sunroom that was robust, elegant, and engineered to last.

The plan called for a slightly larger footprint than the original design, with the structure to be constructed from solid mahogany. Mahogany was selected for its resistance to coastal elements as well as its timeless beauty. We specified copper cladding for the exterior to ensure the new structure would weather the salty New England air effectively.

The sheer scale of a three-storey glass addition demands precise engineering. We designed the structure in-house, pre-assembling the components in our workshop to guarantee a flawless fit before delivering and assembling the materials at the job site. The resulting mahogany and copper glass structure is a vaulted, light-filled architectural feature that blends modern performance with classic Cape style.

Construction begins off-site. The first storey’s mahogany framework is assembled in our shop.

The pre-manufactured components arrive at the project site.

The first-storey section is secured to the new foundation wall, establishing the footprint for the expanded structure.

Copper cladding and operable awning windows are installed.

The second-level installation takes shape, stacked seamlessly atop the reinforced first floor.

The third and final section is framed and clad in copper. The awning windows are strategically placed to drive ventilation through the vertical space.

Featuring 1-1/16″ thick dual-sealed Solarban 70XL argon-filled glass, the room is as energy-efficient as it is beautiful.

This Cape Cod project is a testament to expert design and engineering. The client’s replacement of their failing structure with a solid mahogany and copper sunroom has introduced a new legacy feature to their home. Despite the massive glass surface area, the sunroom’s interior remains comfortable and energy-efficient, protecting the homeowners from the summer sun and winter chill alike.

Whether you are looking to replace an older home feature or add something entirely new, Sunspace Design has assembled a team capable of handling everything from the initial engineering to the final assembly.
