A Double Hip Steel Frame Skylight in Brookline, MA
Today we’re proud to present yet another professional design-build collaboration: we partnered with KVC Builders of Waltham and Colin Smith Architecture of Lexington to engineer and install a double hip steel frame skylight for clients in Brookline, Massachusetts. The resulting collaboration was streamlined and efficient, with Sunspace Design stepping in to provide the specific glass construction services needed to realize the architect’s vision. Let’s take a closer look at the build process.

Two structural drawings:
1) A look at the skylight rafter plan, and 2) a portion of the steel frame.

The king post layout for the hip sections.
The skylight rafters will feature mortise and tenon joinery.

The steel frame is in the shop.
We’re ready for the mahogany to be applied!

Ridge mahogany and the king post are fastened to the steel frame.

The frame is now assembled. It’s time to bring it to the job site!

The skylight assembly is installed on the curb prepared by the general contractor.

High-performance insulated glass is set into the frame.

The skylight’s glass installation is nearly completed.

The skylight is ready for copper caps and flashing.
