A Single Slope Skylight in Charlestown, MA

by | Aug 28, 2024 | Construction

Sunlight streaming unobstructed into a living space is transformative. Natural light breathes life into rooms, paints walls with warmth, and lifts spirits. When a discerning homeowner sought to capture the sun’s magic within their home via glass design as part of a larger construction project, they welcomed Sunspace Design’s expertise. With our decades of experience crafting bespoke mahogany-framed glass structures, we were thrilled to deliver a generously sized, single-slope skylight representing the perfect fusion of natural views and timeless design.

Creating exceptional spaces benefits from the collaboration of many skilled hands. For this project, Sunspace Design proudly joined forces with a talented team of fellow professionals: Fresh Start Contracting Corp of Burlington, Massachusetts (general contracting), PB Architects of Darien, Connecticut (architecture), and Webb Structural Services of Reading, Massachusetts (structural engineering). Sunspace Design’s role was to design, fabricate, and install the custom skylight and then outfit it in elegant copper cladding. Our shared goal was to bring the homeowner’s vision to life.

This custom skylight, sixteen feet long and six feet wide, is a testament to both form and function. Insulated Solarban 70 argon gas-filled panes ensure energy efficiency while allowing breathtaking skyward views. The rich, warm tones of our utile mahogany frame complement the home’s architecture. The frame was carefully pre-assembled in our workshop to streamline the on-site installation process. Every detail was meticulously planned and executed—from the assembly of the structural components to the integration of copper flashing with the new copper roofing. The final result is as beautiful as it is functional, flooding the space below with natural light and serving as testament to the impeccable execution of talented collaborators. Let’s take a closer look at the process.

A skylight is more than a window—it’s an invitation to embrace the sun’s beauty from the comfort of your own home. Abundant natural light, an open and airy ambiance, and the ever-changing canvas of the sky above represent the unique gifts of glass construction.
